Before your meeting/phone call with the elementary school principal:

  • Your best bet is to request an in-person appointment with your school principal vs. talking to him/her over the phone.  One suggestion is to call and ask to meet regarding your child and an “idea” you would like to discuss with him/her.
  • Typically, when it comes to elementary school assemblies, there is a committee (made up of teachers) who will vote on assembly topics for the school year.
  • The areas of health, nutrition, exercise, body image, eating disorders, self-acceptance and acceptance of others, etc. are very hot topics for elementary schools.  PWS fits right in to these areas.
  • School nurses belong to an “association of school nurses,” and would be a natural fit to work with on the topic of PWS.  If you can elicit their help, they may prove to be an invaluable resource.  Not only can they help with the production of a school assembly, but they may also be able to put you in contact with the school nurses association to speak in front of all school nurses in your state/region.  Things to know about school nurses are:

They perform a vital role in the educational setting because
of the strong correlation between a student’s health and
well-being and his or her ability to achieve.

Their goal is to maximize students’ physical, intellectual,
social and emotional health.  They provide numerous services,
of which include “health education & health counseling.”
In short, there is incentive for school nurses to help with a school
                        assembly of this nature.

  • PE teachers would be an excellent resource for providing ideas for the assembly.  Many are involved with “The President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports,” and would more than likely be very interested in helping further educate their students on the importance of good health and how to achieve it.
